Resources for Parents of Oak Meadow School:
We include this article by John Taylor Gatto to provoke serious thinking about the importance of creative and practical aspects to the learning environment. We, frankly, are not at all persuaded by Gatto's assertions about the Prussian background to our educational system, nor do we believe that the motivation of either those who created our current public system, nor those who perpetuate it, is to create robots. Universal education is the law in our nation because as a society we believe that all of us need to understand our common culture. E.D. Hirsch has written eloquently on this in his important book, Cultural Literacy (his most recent book on this subject is The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy). Gatto's observation that the current system produces thoughtless and helpless humans is worth considering.
